night in her life, he was predisposed to listen. "What?" he stammered.
"Tonight's the night I was supposed to get married."
"Marr . . . married?"
Cappy took another swig of his drink and nodded. Despite her resolve not to tell anyone, the painful version was coming out. She reached down beside her chair and produced a simulated brown leather purse. She unzipped it and fished around the cluttered contents until she was able to produce the flight folders for two airline tickets. "These," she sobbed, "are fucking useless. Know what they are?"
Harvey shook his bloated head.
"Two tickets . . . two goddamn airline tickets from Boston to Las Vegas. The lying little bastard told me we were going to get married at the Golden Chapel and catch the midnight show at Circus Circus." The bravado had quickly faded from her voice, deteriorating to a pathetic, little girl whimper.
Harvey blinked. "He . . . he didn't marry you?"
"Married, hah!" Cappy raised her arm to make another circling motion, but the waitress was already there. Harvey dutifully fished out another 20 and slapped it on the table. "Know what he did?" Cappy continued.
Harvey shook his head again and refocused
